Introduction to Gene Function Studies
Gene function studies are central to cancer biology and drug discovery, elucidating how specific genes drive tumor initiation, progression, metastasis, drug resistance, and therapeutic response. These studies distinguish driver genes that promote malignancy from passenger mutations with no growth advantage, providing a molecular framework for understanding cancer pathogenesis. Through gain-of-function (overexpression) and loss-of-function (knockout/knockdown) approaches, researchers can characterize gene roles in tumor cells and the microenvironment. Gain-of-function studies reveal oncogenic potential and identify genes driving proliferation, survival, or invasion. Loss-of-function studies expose genes essential for tumor maintenance, revealing therapeutically exploitable vulnerabilities.Beyond driver identification, gene function studies dissect downstream signaling pathways, including proliferation, apoptosis, metabolism, DNA repair, and immune evasion. They also enable assessment of target dependency across genetic contexts, uncovering context-specific vulnerabilities, synthetic lethal interactions, and resistance mechanisms.

Our Services
Alfa Cytology's gene function study services encompass the core dimensions of your research needs, comprising both in vitro and in vivo modules. Each research project is subjected to rigorous experimental design and comprehensive data validation to ensure the reliability, reproducibility, and translational potential of the results.
In Vitro Gene Function Studies
Our in vitro gene function study services utilize cell-based models to systematically evaluate the effects of genes on tumor cell phenotypes including proliferation, apoptosis, migration, invasion, drug resistance, and metabolism. We support a broad range of gene modulation strategies, including overexpression, knockout, knockdown, and point mutation, in combination with a diverse array of functional detection methods (CCK-8, flow cytometry, Transwell, 3D culture, organoids, etc.) to comprehensively dissect gene function and deliver high-quality, quantifiable functional data for your target screening research.
In Vivo Gene Function Studies
Our in vivo gene function study services employ mouse models to assess the biological functions of genes within the context of an intact organism. Utilizing delivery systems such as lentivirus and AAV, or gene editing technologies, we support gene modulation (overexpression/knockout/knockdown) in CDX, PDX, and GEMM models. Combined with in vivo imaging (bioluminescence, fluorescence), tumor growth monitoring, histopathological analysis, and molecular biomarker detection, we systematically evaluate the impact of genes on tumor growth, metastasis, angiogenesis, immune microenvironment remodeling, and drug response, providing critical in vivo evidence for target validation and drug development.
