Lung organoids are three-dimensional in vitro models derived from stem cells or primary lung tissue that recapitulate key structural and functional features of the human respiratory epithelium, including ciliated cells, secretory cells, and alveolar epithelial cells. Leveraging an established three-dimensional cell culture infrastructure and broad biological expertise, Alfa Cytology delivers end-to-end custom lung organoid development services to support biomedical research. Services encompass every stage of development, including specialized primary tissue sourcing, precise cell lineage isolation, customized matrix encapsulation, targeted biochemical differentiation, and quality validation designed around specific experimental parameters.
Lung organoids are self-organizing, multi-cellular structures generated from primary tissue progenitor cells or stem cells that recapitulate key features of the cellular heterogeneity, spatial patterning, and functional properties of the human respiratory tract. These three-dimensional architectures can differentiate into proximal airway epithelial components, such as ciliated, goblet, and basal cells, as well as distal alveolar compartments that can include type I and type II pneumocyte-like cells. By exhibiting key physiological functions, including surfactant secretion, mucociliary clearance, and barrier integrity, lung organoids provide a human-relevant biological platform for modeling respiratory biology and therapeutic evaluation.

Lung organoids offer distinct advantages over conventional in vitro and in vivo models, providing a physiologically relevant platform that bridges the gap between simple cell cultures and animal studies.
Normal lung organoids serve as versatile physiological model systems, supporting a broad spectrum of baseline pulmonary research, toxicological screening, and safety assessments.

Pulmonary Physiology & Homeostasis Studies
Investigating healthy respiratory epithelial differentiation, cellular turnover, mucociliary clearance mechanics, and surfactant synthesis under normal physiological conditions.

Toxicological & Safety Evaluation
Assessing chemical, aerosol, environmental pollutant, and pharmaceutical compound safety, acute tissue cytotoxicity, and dose-dependent epithelial responses.

Drug Permeability & Barrier Function Testing
Evaluating aerosolized candidate drug transport, epithelial tight junction integrity, membrane permeability, and systemic absorption potential.
With expertise in organoid technology and a comprehensive platform covering stem cell differentiation, primary tissue culture, and functional characterization, Alfa Cytology offers end-to-end lung organoid development services tailored to your research objectives. From model design and construction to validation and downstream applications, our team supports every stage of your project to ensure organoid models that meet your specific experimental requirements.
Customized lung organoid development is available to support specific research objectives, with model design and culture strategies adapted to the donor tissue source and species of interest.

Normal Tissue-Derived Lung Organoid Models
Developing organoids from normal lung tissue specimens to maintain donor-associated genetic features and key epithelial subtypes. These models support studies of respiratory epithelial biology, disease modeling, and target evaluation. Culture conditions can be adjusted to preserve region-specific characteristics of the airway or alveolar epithelium.

iPSC-Derived Lung Organoid Models
Generating lung organoids through stepwise differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells into lung progenitor and differentiated epithelial populations. This approach supports scalable model production and gene-editing applications without requiring direct lung tissue biopsy. Models can be tailored to represent specific lung regions or cell compositions.

Human Lung Organoid Models
Deriving human lung organoids that reflect multi-lineage epithelial complexity, epithelial polarization, and donor-associated transcriptional features. These models provide human-relevant systems for studying respiratory biology and evaluating therapeutic candidates.

Mouse Lung Organoid Models
Establishing mouse lung organoids from primary progenitor cells isolated from selected mouse strains. These models support validation of target pathways and comparison with murine in vivo systems. Culture conditions can be adapted for reproducible formation and expansion.

Rat Lung Organoid Models
Generating rat lung organoids to support pharmacological, toxicological, and physiological research requiring rat-relevant pathways. These models enable compound evaluation and comparison with rat in vivo findings. Development conditions are optimized for stable culture and functional assessment.

Lung Organoids from Additional Species
Developing lung organoids from additional mammalian species based on available tissue or stem cell sources. Each project is assessed for feasibility, with culture conditions tailored to the species of interest. These models support comparative biology and cross-species research.
Beyond model development, we provide a comprehensive suite of services that span the entire research pipeline, from organoid construction to downstream functional analysis, enabling researchers to obtain consistent, end-to-end support within a single service framework.

iPSC-derived lung organoids were developed and used to establish a bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis model. Following treatment with bleomycin, significantly increased α-SMA expression was observed compared with the Day 0 group. α-SMA served as a key myofibroblast marker, and its induction was accompanied by extensive collagen-I accumulation in the iPSC-derived lung organoids. These results supported the utility of the developed iPSC-derived lung organoid platform for modeling bleomycin-induced fibrotic responses.
